FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Below you’ll find answers to common questions about red light therapy at Sunkissed. Sessions use red and near-infrared light and are offered as a comfortable, non-UV light experience designed to complement skincare and self-care routines.
This section explains how sessions work, what to expect, and whether red light therapy may be a good fit for your routine. Individual experiences vary, and sessions are provided for cosmetic and routine-based use only.
Frequently asked questions
Red light therapy is a light-based session that uses visible red and near-infrared light delivered through LED technology. It does not use ultraviolet (UV) light and does not tan the skin.
The technology is based on how different wavelengths of light interact with the body at varying depths, which is why red and near-infrared wavelengths are commonly used in cosmetic and wellness environments. At Sunkissed, red light therapy is offered as a non-UV light experience designed to complement skincare and self-care routines.
In non-medical settings, red light therapy is generally considered well tolerated when used as directed and is commonly offered in cosmetic and wellness environments.
At Sunkissed, sessions are designed to be comfortable, low-intensity and suitable for routine-based use.
Red light therapy at Sunkissed is not a medical treatment. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant, are taking photosensitising medication, or have any concerns about whether red light therapy is suitable for you, we recommend speaking with a qualified healthcare professional before booking.
Our team is always happy to answer questions and explain what to expect before your first session.
We only allow individuals over the age of 18 to use our Red Light Therapy Bed. If you look younger than 21 you may be asked to provide ID before using our RLT bed.
Sunbeds use ultraviolet (UV) light to darken the skin. Red light therapy does not emit UV light and does not produce a tan.
Instead, red light therapy uses red and near-infrared wavelengths, which sit in a different part of the light spectrum. Because of this, red light sessions are positioned as a non-UV option and are typically used for routine-based, cosmetic or self-care purposes rather than tanning.
During a session, you lie comfortably in the red light bed while red and near-infrared light surrounds the body, with certain wavelengths penetrating the skin to varying depths.
The session is designed to be calm, comfortable and low-intensity.
Sessions are short, there is no downtime afterwards, and most people return to their normal activities immediately. The experience itself is straightforward and does not involve intense heat, burning or UV exposure.
Red and near-infrared light is delivered directly to exposed areas of the skin, so clothing will block the light in covered areas. For this reason, many people choose to wear minimal clothing during a session.
You’re welcome to wear underwear or swimwear, and you can keep clothing on any areas you prefer not to expose.
We recommend choosing whatever you feel most comfortable in. How much skin you choose to expose is entirely your choice.
We recommend wearing eye protection during your red light session for comfort. While red light therapy does not use UV light, the brightness of the LEDs may feel uncomfortable for some people when lying in the bed.
Free WinkEase eye protectors are provided in the room for your use. You’re also welcome to bring your own eye protection or purchase suitable goggles from the salon if you prefer.
Our team is happy to answer any questions before your session so you can choose what feels most comfortable for you.
We recommend not using red light therapy, or seeking medical advice before booking, if any of the following apply to you:
• You are pregnant
• You have a known light sensitivity or photosensitivity
• You have a diagnosed eye condition
• You have epilepsy or a history of light-triggered seizures
• You have a history of malignant cancer
• You have a thyroid condition (in which case the neck and upper chest should remain covered)
• You have recently experienced burns or skin trauma (within the last 24–48 hours)
If you’re unsure whether red light therapy is appropriate for you, we recommend speaking with a qualified healthcare professional before booking.
Our team is always happy to talk through what a session involves and answer general questions, but we’re unable to provide medical advice.
Staying hydrated is always a good idea, so we recommend drinking water after your red light session, just as you would after any warm or relaxing experience.
Drinking water helps maintain general hydration and comfort.
There’s no specific requirement to do anything differently after a session, and you can return to your normal activities straight away.
Yes, you can use a UV tanning bed and a red light session on the same day.
Some clients choose to have their red light session before a UV tanning session, while others prefer the opposite order. There is no requirement to follow a specific sequence, and you can choose the order that feels most comfortable for you.
At Sunkissed, both services are offered as separate, routine-based experiences. Our team is happy to explain what to expect from each session so you can decide what works best for your visit.

How often you choose to have a session is a personal preference and can vary from person to person.
